You pin a fresh paper target, the round starts, and a corner has already peeled off the foam and started to fan. Now the paper shifts every time you pull arrows, and your reference moves with it.

That is what thin target pins do. A small shaft grips one tiny point, so the face curls at the edges, catches air, and tears out around the hole. The fix is not a longer pin. It is more surface holding the paper down.
